Luton announces a hat trick of government funding totalling £37 million for road, town centre and open space improvements.
The council has leapt into action to spend the first £22 million. Work on the East Luton Corridor - a road link between Junction 10a of the M1 and the airport that will cut congestion and enable the airport to deliver its vision of 30 million passengers per year by 2030 - is already underway. The road will be completed by March 2008.
Nearly £2 million has been awarded to improve parks and open spaces in Luton and South Bedfordshire, with £84,000 specifically for Luton to develop an open space strategy.
The remaining £13 million, still subject to final government confirmation, will be used to start the process of improving the area around the town centre rail station.
