St George's Square Renaissance

The building of the new St George's Square is well underway and is now only a few months from becoming the exciting focal point of the town centre.

Planned to open in November, the square's renaissance will result in a pedestrian space bigger than that of Leicester Square in London.  Whilst it has been designed to be inkeeping with the tradition of the town, it will provide a new and vibrant community area hosting a range of markets, concerts and events.

The square is what Luton residents have wanted for many years, giving the town an area which is both attractive and fiunctional.

The innovative design consists of a combination of the creative use of space and level changes with high quality and durable materials that will reduce the long-term cost of maintenance.

Cllr Sid Rutstein, executive member with responsibility for regeneration said: "The new square is the first step in the regeneration of the town.  It will provde a contemporary and safe focal point which will be the benchmark for projects that follow."

Features of the new square include: ampitheatre seating; framework of trees and shrubs; integrated lighting; large grassed area; new cycle racks; restricted vehicle access; and improved disabled access.
