New Heart for Luton Town Centre

Work has started on the £2.5 million new look St George's Square.  The completed square, framed by mature trees and featuring two distinctive granite terraces lit by a 20-metre lighting column, will be a contemporary space that is safe by day and night.

Key to the design is the central space that will host entertainment, events and festivals, a programme of street festivals throughout the year, markets and a café.

Said Cllr Andy Strange, executive portfolio holder with special responsibility for the built environment:  "The new St George's Square will provide a public space that will be much better used and will give an enormous boost to our efforts to improve the town centre."

The development of the square is the first step in a £4 billion regeneration of Luton and a benchmark of projects that will follow.

The square will be unveiled to the public in October 2006.
